Chickens come into season and are mounted by a rooster. The eggs they lay are thus fertilised and when a batch is laid over a period, the chicken sits on them until they hatch out. This is the normal way. On the other hand, eggs that are laid by the chickens that the rooster has mounted, can be put in an incubator and hatched out that way.

The cockerel mates with the hen and she then produces a number of fertilised egg sacs inside her.
When she lays the egg sacs, they harden in the air, thus forming what we know as eggs.

A rooster has to mate with a chicken, then when she lays her egg, it will have a baby chick inside.

If the rooster has serviced the hens then they are fertilized. The egg industry does not allow roosters in the house.
