translator that I can type in a basic English sentence and have it translate it into romaji (english letters)? I just want to say "mummy will come back", "you'll be okay", "are you happy?", that sort of thing.

I have a way.. You got to use both of the links

the first would be the English -> Japanese translator
the second would be the Japanese -> Romaji

btw,
"mummy will come back" = "mama wa modotte kuru"
"you'll be okay" = "daijoubu des" or "mondainai"
"are you happy?" = "tanoshikatta?"

send my regards to your Japanese friend :-D.
