In the United States the name parakeet usually refers to the Australian bird, the Budgerigar, sometimes called a Budgie (probably because how the heck to do you pronounce Budgerigar?) The actual term parakeet does not refer to any particular species, but a member of the parrot family that has a long tail. They can range in size from very small, like a Budgie, to a fairly good size bird, like the Indian Ring-necks and some of the conures. There are many species of parrakeets.

Parrotlets are like minuature parrots. They have short tails and are similar in size to a love bird, another member of the parrot family. Parrotlets are found in Mexico, Central and South America. They actually can be taught to talk. There are several species.

Quaker Parakeets, also called Monk Parakeets, are a species of bird originally found in Argentina. They have green backs, wings and heads and grey breasts. There are a few colonies of them in the United States, where they have escaped, or been released and have set up huge nests. They build communal nests on bill boards, electrical transformers and in trees. They are able to survive cold temperatures and have done well. This is unfortunate as they are non-native birds and can be a nusiance.
