I understand all of them are in a sense only bound pieces of paper w/ print like any other book. But I respect all religions and their writings, therefore, I needed an answer in a religious sense.

If you'd care to properly look up the definition of "kosher", you would find that it also can be used as a synonym for "proper". I took advantage of the idea and used the word simply for humor in irony.

The Jewish scholars have been writing in the margins of Holy Texts for generations. They consider it essential to the learning and explanation of such texts. And the texts are printed with these additions from such learned people in the hopes that they will help to clarify the text for someone else reading it.

We use highlighter when we want to underscore an important passage. Many folks find this helps them remember the text or find it later for reference.

While I prefer the notebook method of learning, and do not like writing in my own books, many folks have different ways of learning and remembering and referencing. Dogears on the pages, bookmarks, highlighter, pencil underscoring, or writing in the margins.

I guess it is all dependent on how you look at a book. If you feel that it is not for scribbling, then use a notebook.

However, defacing a book, no matter what it is, is not kosher to me. Disrespect of a holy text is not something I feel is proper. Disrespect of any religion shows intolerance. And that is an issue we need to address more, especially on this board. So many folks who do not even give common courtesy to each other, because they are ignorant or just plain hateful.

But, this is the real world.

What makes any book Holy? Holy is a concept of man to indicate that it has some omnipotent association with a deity. This is probably asbsolute poppycock. A book is a book and as such has no life, miracle or aura associated with it. No God has touched it or resides between its covers
So therefore write in it if you will!

I underline in my Bible, and I write little notes in the margin when someone tells me the meaning of the verse. I also write the date, and the person preaching next to the text. There is nothing wrong in marking your Bible as long as you are doing it for the right reasons. Don't abuse your Holy Book.

I have been in classes where I saw people writing in, underlining, highlighting in Bibles, Books of Mormon. This wasn't just one person. I was one of the minority, I really wasn't participating, just listening.

IMO, it's fine. It's a book. It's material. It's a handy place to take notes. A lot of people will say the book is equal to the contents.

Since "kosher" refers to Jewish dietary laws, then no, writing in holy books is not kosher.

I have highlighted things in my Bible before. I guess it's up to you whether you want to highlight a certain verse or something.

NO, you should not damage the Bible in any way, even after you are gone there will be someone who is in need of the Word. Use a notebook.
