The Holy Spirit is knocking on every ones heart, but is the ones who choose to listen that He will relate to. When we accept Jesus as our personnel Savior then the Holy Spirit takes up residence inside of us. The Holy Spirit is like our conscience, and helps us to chose wisely. If we will only listen to Him. You also have to read the Bible to know the truths.

As a medium my 'best friend' turned out to be an angel who turned my attention to God, when as an athiest, I did not know at the time that he was an angel - an agent of the Holy Spirit. But he saved my life. The Spirit can and does work outside of the church building and in the hearts and souls of all.
As someone here said, listening is key. So is seeing. (that there is more in this world than meets the eye, so to speak.)
As a Christian we test all spirits - if they do not confess Jesus as Lord and teach you in His way only, then they are by definition not Holy. I hope this helps, and I Bless your searching heart, if this is personal to you.
