It doesn't have to be "versus". Many religions have centuries of experience distilled into wisdom and are well worth listening to. I have listened to what religious leaders have told me what to think. I still think critically afterwards. What I decide to do, I am still accountable for.

Critical thinking is better, because the One True God equitably endows each man with the rational sense for him to decide his own destiny. Religious, political, educational leaders...cannot make decisions for humanity. They may organize, guide, make plan...but not authoritatively decide all things.
However, in order to make mature and independent decisions in life, each man must learn to develop himself physically, intellectually and spiritually. Then, he can become useful for himself and for his neighbors. Otherwise, the so-called critical thinking may lead to chaos and confusion as we are now witnessing.

it is common assumption that people with religion never use their brains, but that's not true, as i've seen people who went down in history who proved how thinking people they are, like for example St. Thomas Moore. it's good to study everything before following, but what i think best is humility --- the ability to admit one's own limits as a human being.

A mix is best because if you use just one way to think you end up hating all the things you can't control.

You need to read the Bible to know the truth. Man can distort the truth. Man makes us extra laws. God gave us 10 laws to protect us. Religion will send a person to hell. They have so many rules and regulations. Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by Him. People want to make up ways to get to heaven, or you have to do this to do that. I am a Baptist, but that wont get me into heaven. I just have to read His love letters to myself which is the Bible. He will reveal Himself to you as you study His Word. God bless you.
