It depends on where you are. Pay is not the same everywhere.
As for difficulty, some Sheriff's Deputies in rural areas have to learn a vast amount of geography simply to get to calls.
Once a deputy is at a call, they may not have backup readily available, which can be dangerous. One of my friends was a deputy in a rural county and basically all of his calls were code-3 simply to get to the area in a reasonable amount of time. This upped the chances for being involved in an accident.
I worked for a city police department and it was better in some ways, but we stayed fairly busy, sometimes the deputies go for long periods of time without calls.

Poor ol Sheriffs No wonder they become a ss wipes quicker than the local police. Their training requires them to spend about two years in the county jail . Dealing with the Elite scum of the world. Of course not all some didn't do it ?
The local rookies just get to be a s s oles when they feel like it. Usually the day after not getting a little from the other half.
Then after a few years they become tolerable a s s holes . Ask them they will be honest.

They are pretty much the same thing working for a police dept or a sheriffs office police are for a state or municipality sheriffs and deputies are county enforcement so unless you are a state police officer a sheriff or deputy has a bigger jurisdiction than a police officer

They are bascally the same. However from the area I live in the Sheriff Deputies have to wait longer for their back up officers and thus, need to have a higher level of officer safety and ability to talk or fight their way out of a bad situation.

their both pretty good. a sheriff can over rule a police officer, but it doesn't happen. police have civil service, and their jobs are more secure. sheriffs have to fear for their jobs every 4 years during elections

Sheriff is the harder job. It is an elected position. So not only do you have to run a law enforcement agency you also need to be a politician. Can be difficult to balance ethical law enforcement and political expediency.
Pay usually depends on the size of the agency. Neither job will make you a millionaire.

A sheriff patrolls the whole county
the town or city police patroll in their city or town.
either could run into some doped up freak with a gun at any time.
or have a robbery, domestic violence or anything in their area.
