If I were in that position, I would probably get rid of the gun, never been comfortable with those things.
As for animosity against him, I harbour none; my religion is between me and God. If he does not like my religion, that is for him to decide, it's his life and his choices. There are millions out there who hate each others' religions. Murdering a critic like Rushdie would set the precedent for "religious tragedy", if you will.
I would not want to have murder on my hands for any reason; if someone (Rushdie or you, anyone) came to me and said awful things about Islam, Christianity, Judaism or any other religion, I would tell them I am not interested in the discussion and walk away.
Though I do not mind learning about other religions.
Cheers.

Praise be to Allaah.
Killing a non-Muslim when he is a mu’aahid (one of those who have a peace treaty with the Muslims) is a sin, one of the major sins. Al-Bukhaari narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever kills a mu’aahid will not smell the fragrance of Paradise, even though its fragrance may detected from a distance of forty days.’” But with regard to non-Muslims who are at war with the Muslims and do not have a peace treaty with the Muslims or are not living under Muslim rule, then Muslims are commanded to kill them, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you” [al-Tawbah 9:123]
But this should be in the case of jihaad under the leadership of one of the leaders of the Muslims, or his deputy.

Muslims are taught only to kill when they are attacked first. If this man attacked and tried to harm my husband, I have no doubt my husband would do all he had to, to protect himself. He would not, however, simply walk in and kill the man. Muslims are taught to value human life and respect everyone even if they do not agree with them.

no. because:
[29] And say: "The truth is from your Lord." Then whosoever wills, let him believe; and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve. Verily, We have prepared for the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers), a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them ........
