Depends what school or university you go to. Probably the most common would be french, italian, german, japanese, chinese and spanish although there would be places available 2 learn any language. At my high school they teach french and italian

At my first high school, we had the choice of French, German, Italian or Japanese. At my second, I think only French and Japanese were offered. (I did Japanese for 5 years, but now I live in Europe near a border where French and German are spoken, so I missed out there.)

Second language teaching is pretty dismal in Australia really. There was nothing at the primary school level (for me), which is when you really can benefit from it. As a result, many Australians speak only English well, unless they have some non-English speaking family background.

I agree with Aussie Girl, it really depends on where you go.
My high school taught only Indonesian, but College had German, Italian, French etc. My brother learnt Japanese at his school.

In Australia, if you're interested in tourism, then Asian languages are the most handy to have.

Depends on the state or territory. In the state of Victoria, 48 languages were taught in state schools in 2005 (see report below)
