the concept of the jihad involves the idea that God offers special rewards to those who are willing to die in battle for their faith. Is there any essential difference between this attitude and those who martyred themselves for their Christian faith?how so/why not?

Jesus didn't expect or want Christians to be martyrs. He ordered us all to sell all we own and buy swords. He expected us to become skilled. He admonished us that those who live by the sword die by the sword. So that sword is used to instill the Fear of God into your enemy, not to hurt them.

The word "Jihad" means struggle, or to be specific, striving in the cause of God. Any struggle done in day-to-day life to please God can be considered Jihad. One of the highest levels of Jihad is to stand up to a tyrant and speak a word of truth. Control of the self from wrong doings is also a great Jihad. One of the forms of Jihad is to take up arms in defense of Islam or a Muslim country when Islam is attacked. This kind of Jihad has to be declared by the religious leadership or by a Muslim head of state who is following the Quran and Sunnah.

The "Jihad" is known as the struggle.....

Only one of the five 'Jihads' is War against the unbeliever.

Sadly it is the most well-known of the types, and the most misunderstood by both believers and unbelievers.

For the non-Muslim; Jihad = death to everyone.
For the Muslim; Jihad = death to all males of fighting age.

In reality both are wrong..... the Jihad is not supposed to be directed against the "innocents" and the terrorists are merely guaranteeing themselves a seat next to Shaitan by indiscriminately detonating explosives in crowded market streets.

I learned the definintion of jihad as the struggle inside a person between their own will and surrendering to God/Allah's will.

Religion has a history of metaphor's being taken out of literary and cultural context to justify otherwise unjustifiable acts. It was true yesterday, it's true today, and barring a miracle I'd bet money it'll be true tommorrow.

jihad means struggle with own self to do good. and it's used alot to describe a situation where a person had to struggle to fight his desires or against committing sins. but people who are ignorant of the word may think of a person in a negative way.

God help us in this hard time.

both suck ! And both are very sinful ! life is the cornerstone of good and that which goes against life is dishonorable .
superstitious beliefs that disgrace life for no good reason are intrinsically evil whether they support their evil with false concepts of gods or devils is entirely irrelevant and worthless.
Senseless killing is evil as is the false god that is used to justify .
Learn the atheist jihad of truth and the doors of heaven on earth may come to pass;rather then the hell on earth of murder and misery.
peace out

syuhada (person who die in jihad) are dead in believe that life in this world just a test from God to choose to be in the right side or not, because the real life is at akhirat (the last universe). if he/she died, then he/she go to heaven and safed from the hell. if he/she still alive, then he/she defend God says.

but jihad is not to war. qital is war! and jihad is to strive and struggle in God way!

To me that is the Muslims faith, just like the Inquisition.Look how many suffered through that.If the West wouldn't have had to help some of our Middle Eastern allies we would never had been targeted. That is my belief.

at the same time as outnumbered 50 to at least a million, it is 'a conflict adversarial to their personal personal evil nature, attempting to be a more suitable robust human being'. at the same time as the numbers are more suitable like 20 to at least a million, it begins growing ''lack of life to the infidels'. At 2 to at least a million, it is flat out homicide and terrorism.
