You can! It is very hard but also rewarding. You have to change the aspects of your life that you dislike the most and cause the most stress. Constantly monitor your own thoughts to determine if you're making the right choices. Two books that helped me immensely are "Surviving Manic-Depression" and "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide" I pull them out whenever I think I don't want to take my medication to remind me that that is a symptom of mania and all kinds of hints. The hardest part is being self-reliant because nobody can read your mind and you have to be totally honest with yourself. I finally found the balance of medication that works for ME, everyone is different . Also I went through Posttramatic Stress treatment (EMRD) for six months
which was a godsend, although I hear it doesn't work for eveyone, I was able to stop dwelling on the dark events from the past and start working on the future. I recently started with a new therapist and now she says if she didn't know, she could never tell that I am bi-polar!! Just pay attention to YOURSELF. Know what you want and don't want and gear your life towards as little stress as possible.

Depression is a disease, once you have it, you'll always have it.. By taking medication, listening to your doctor, asking questions, and being honest, will have a big roll in helping you to feel better. If you aren't feeling better with the medication that you are on or feeling worse, you need to let your psychiatrist know, so that they can try you on something different. There are so many medications out there for depression, I'm sure that you'll find one that's right for you, or at least I hope that you do. If you ever are put on a medication or switched from one to another, and it makes you have suicidal thoughts you need to let someone know immediately.. because depression medicine has a high risk of making people have suicidal thoughts.. and you don't want those.
I wish you the best of luck, I've suffered with depression for 9 years.

I also suffer from bipolar, and have since I was pretty young. I know that everyone preaches doctors, meds, counseling - but I have advice that I know works. I can't stand taking the medication, because it makes me feel weird and all I do is sleep, but I found a counselor who had suggested watching for triggers toward the extremes either way, and avoiding them. Diet modification and alternative therapies like accupuncture can help a lot, too. I would talk to a counselor, and shop around for one who believes in controlling it without medication, and then see them for as long as they see fit - and follow their alternative therapies, because they really can help. I hope you find a solution that works for you, as I know where you're coming from. (You can email me if you need any help with anything, too!)

Have you tried some of the new meds for this? Since this is a chemical imbalance you have a reasonable chance of controling this thought various meds or combos of meds. For awhile it can be a trial and error method until you find what works for you. Good luck!!
