I was in Germany a while back and pretty much all I drank was guinness, it was soo good! But back here in the states I can't even get myself to finish one at the bar it tastes so bad. Is it brewed completely different or what?

In a way........yes.
True Guinness is made with 3% pastuerized soured wort
(unfermented beer) added back in to the finished product.
That is what gives true Guiness its "tang". The Guiness that is exported to the states cannot by law have the soured wort,
so.....it is a different product. One can only assume that the
Guiness you drank in Germany was true Guiness.
Anyone I ever spoke with who has had the pleasure of drinking true Guines has said the same thing.

Some friends of mine lived and worked in Ireland for about a year and they had a similar experience. They did, however, find one bar back in the states that had good Guinness.

The secret, allegedly, is that they use pressurized nitrogen rather than carbon dioxide. The idea is that a keg of Guinness will be less foamy and have a richer head with nitrogen than CO2. This sounds a little crazy, but there's an article on wikipedia (for whatever that's worth) that seems to support such a conclusion.

If it is a canned or bottled product, the temperature, movements and extra time involed in shipping deminish the quality of the product. In beer, the fresher the better.
If it is a draught product, then the ingredients used will vary even if the recipe is exactly the same, which it isn't. As most large brewers with international markets vary the recipes to suit the taste of the region and cost of production.
I know exactly how you feel, as I'm from Hong Kong and none of the beers here taste anything like their original counter parts.

I think its because its brewed by different companies. Sometimes foreign beer companies have arrangments with domestic beer companies to have them brew the beer for them in order to make it cheaper and avoid higher taxes and penalties and unfortunately sometimes it doesn't taste the same. I'm from Canada and when I have a Canadian beer in the US it doesn't taste the same. I also like Bud beer in the States but can't stand the taste of it in Canada, because its brewed by another company up here. You'd have to get the Guinness beer thats imported to have it taste the same I think.

Germany is a lot closer to Ireland than the states are. Therefore the guiness you are drinking in Germany is far more fresh than in the states!!
It arrives to Germany days after brewing rather than weeks

This is the reason that beer that is brewed in the US tastes better in the US and vice versa.. That goes for just about all brews
