In mark 4:10-12, jesus appears to be saying that he speaks in parables in order to keep people from understanding, and therefore changing their lives. How can this passage be explained, given the traditional view of Jesus and his mission?

This pretty much means that people who have not repented their sins and are not saved will not be able to understand what the verses mean. I have read that when a person is not saved, the Holy Spirit is not working with them and they cannot make heads or tails out of the Bible. I was at this point for awhile until I was really born again and saved. Once you are saved, the Holy Spirit works with you so you understand what you are reading.

When Jesus used illustrations, they were about things that normally was understood by the people. People understood this parable because they understood about seeds being planted, and the different soils that he mentions down through verse 20, the people understood, because they were farmers. If they didn't understand the parable, it was because they didn't want to hear what Jesus was telling them.
