call a emergency security council meeting and demand that israel return to its pre 1967 borders. there's already a UN resolution in place, UN 194 which was the basis for a future Israeli state. its been on the books since 1948. there's also a resolution UN 242 which demands the return to the original borders after the 1967 war. the US would have to put extreme pressure on the Israelis to not act unilaterally (threaten sanctions/stop arms shipments and aid).
in this case there would be no point in threatening Iran with sanctions or attack. the religious element in Shiism could allow mass martyrdom so mutually assured destruction (MAD) would not apply.

If Iranian leaders ever completely lost any notion of self preservation and threatened that, and I was UN Secretary General... The priority obviously would be to prevent nuclear weapons use not only by Iran but also against Iran in a preemptive strike. I'd publicly say that the use of nuclear weapons to target civilian population would be a war crime, that using them against Israel would be an unprovoked, unwarranted and wholly unjustifiable attack that would have the most dire consequences for the region and the world. Then I would say that the first use of nuclear weapons by any state would immediately give cause to any of the other nuclear powers to retaliate in kind. I would try to get unanimous support on the Security Council for a resolution authorizing all necessary military force to disarm Iran of its nuclear weapons, and should it have any, chemical and biological weapons, as well as an international blockade of Iranian sea ports and airspace. No government could ever be allowed to threaten world peace with impunity and the international community would have to be seen to unite and end that threat. The US and European allies would no doubt already be helping Israel prepare to defend itself and the role of the UN while important, would not be the main factor in events. All of this is presuming Israel didn't immediately launch airstrikes bombing Iran back to the stone age. If it chose to do so after such a threat, the UN would be unable to condemn it.

Iran doesn't have the military capability to defeat Israel.

Remember Lebanon?

Hezbollah fired hundreds of rockets into Israel and only some of them hit something?

Israel leveled the entire infrastructure of the country in precise, calculated strikes?

The only reason they stopped was that the entire world belly ached about the terrible cruel Jews and the poor terrorists who are juse expressing their anger and deserve a hug?

What do you think would happen if Israel didn't stop next time?

(By the way, don't forget that there are now more than 30 American war ships in the Persian Gulf, 15 more in the Mediterranean, and another 15 enroute either inbound or outbound the Indian Ocean as part of the constant rotation.)

What you are describing is a totally new situation. Iran has not directly threatened anyone thus far. But if they had nuclear weapons, and threatened to use them against Israel, then there would be nothing that I, nor the U.S.A., nor the U.N. could do.

We would have to sit back and watch one of the most horrible wars in history. Iran and Israel would destroy each other.

Other countries would have to go in after and clean up what is left.

The only hope would be if all the superpowers of the world got together and went to both sides, demanding that talks take place. They would have to provide both incentives, and perhaps even threats, in order to get both sides to comply with resolutions towards peace.

Is this a hypothetical question? Or has Iran really announced it?
Either way, it would be WW3. I hope that doesn't happen, we the United States of America would have to help Israel, which would cost us more money and cost us many more lives, which NO ONE wants. If we were to help surely other countries would to, on both sides. Which would cost more money to other Nations and Lives.

Who ever, wants war or likes it, is crazy and need to be put into an institution.

I would get in my limo and go to lunch
and call by cell to talk with anyone I knew in Iran to say "goodbye"
Because, with an ultimatum like that AND 48 hours to react-- Israel would blow the living God out of Iran within 36 !! The shear threat of a thing like this WOULD BE an act of war and there would be nothing that anyone could say or do but stand by and watch that little strip of sand turn into glass !!!

Two choices.

1. Bury your head in the sand and hope it goes away!

2. Get ready for WW3!

I really do not see much difference. Even if Isreal agrees to leave the next thing would be Jerusalem. A very holy place for Muslims as well. Real problem is the fact that this very scenario is taking place but no one wants to admit it.

Sorry I can't be of more help...

Well you and the UN wont have to do a thing, the first mistake Iran made was giving Israel 48hrs, I would guess that Israel within the next few hours will turn Iran into a waste land. And if they attack Israel and they were unable too the US will.

"Imagine you are working in the UN...."

I would:
1. Line my pockets with $$$'s doing a scam on a UN program to feed the poor.
2. Do nothing about the situation in Iran.
3. Blame everything on the USA.

Everyone should be able to develope whatever they want. This is probably a lot to do with the fact that Iran is next on hit list if America can get Iraq right. I said a long time ago, stuff is fed to media to prepare for something coming in the future. Oh and they have oil in Iran as well!!!
