When I was a dental student, I got a hygiene license (RDH) and worked in private offices for my junior and senior years. EVERYONE assumed that I was a doctor. After the first couple of weeks of correcting them when they called me "doctor," I just gave up. I worked with a male dental assistant in someone else's office for about a year. In fact, he was a dental student at the time. Personally, I didn't have a problem working with him. In fact, it was great, because he had more of an appreciation for what I was doing - or sometimes trying to do. When he went out to get the patient, people asked where their "regular" doctor was, assuming that he was the doctor and suggesting by their questions that they did not want to go into the treatment room with him. He always, always had to tell them that he was not the new dentist, but he was "only" the assistant. This had to be weird for him. There were times when the dynamic was a little weird, though, between the three of us in the room - doctor, assistant and patient. I think people are more used to turning to the female assistant in times of fear when they need comfort. This is especially true of children. So, I didn't really answer your question, because I don't know from personal experience, but maybe this answer will help you a little.

NO not at all - in today's day who cares what others think. If that's what you like doing - go for it.
