Nobody: Yes, the all that glitters is gold is the physical world that is in forgetfullness {because the light of wisdom is so bright, the physical world is taken as the real} this is the price that is paid for the steps to acsend. Are we in agreement?

noboby: Yes thats a good way to put it, fragments, things of the material world that glitter because of "fallen" wisdom & keep us in a state of forgetfullness or blind to the greater reality.

sunman: I don't think I understand what you mean by symbols. I know the sun represents consciousness & water = the unconscious.

To Nobody: Interesting interpretation, the Gnostic Gospels and other writings are being updated as we speak.
To Mr. Drifter: You may mix and match imagery as you see fit, they are gifts to be interpreted as you wish. The sun shines in all directions at once.
"There's a Lady who's sure all that glitters is gold and she's buying a stairway to heaven"
The first line holds a reference to Alchemist symbology; turning base metals to gold(truth/knowledge). The Gnostics realized that all physical reality is symbolic of greater realities. This has been misunderstood to mean that physical reality is less than real, but in fact, all objects within it contain meaning which reveals those greater realities. Getting the knowledge/meaning from the symbol is getting the gold from all that glitters. The gold is then used to buy a stairway to heaven. In that sense the knowledge gained is used as steps to that greater reality(heaven). I hope you are following me. To discern the meanings in the symbols, one must use more than the logic of the intellect alone. The Lady(intuitions) must be used. Only with both hands can one grasp the Truth.

Symbols are multidimensional. They mean many things at many levels. What many people don't understand is that symbols can also contain what I can only call 'compressed experience'. This is one step deeper into the meaning. One can know the meaning of a symbol, one can experience the meaning of a symbol, and finally, one can become the meaning of symbol. Don't forget, physical events are symbolic also. 'Born again' is a symbolic event.

No! You are mixing allegorical and physical imagery. Hardly surprising given the (intentional) obscurity of Gnostic teaching!

The 'stairway' IS Sophia's light. When asked "how they came down from the invisibilities?" Christ explains: 'Son of Man consented with Sophia, his consort, and revealed a great androgynous light'. She is the one who "/shines white light and wants to show/ how everything still turns to gold"

Through this the Disciples, who Christ describes as 'Sons of Light', came from the immortal to 'the world that dies'.

But before His arrival the Disciples were bound here by forgetfulness.

He goes on to explain that he was then sent to earth in the form of the man Jesus to give the Disciples the knowledge (Gnosis) of their true nature needed to rescue themselves from the physical world and return to the spiritual world. In the song he is "the piper (that) will lead us to reason".

And in the same way (through knowledge) all men born on earth, who without this are described 'as dust', may awaken that drop of light within them.

Once awakened this will allow 'her sons' to 'attain honour and glory and go up to their Father'.

So, in summary, Sophia's light enabled the Disciples to descend (the stairway to Heaven) to reawaken the light within each of us. There is, as far as I know, no need for the stairway on the return journey. The light within, recognising it's true nature at last, simply returns from whence it came. "When all are one and one is all".

cosmicdrifter: Are you saying forgetfulness is the price? Yes, when we pay (abandon) this we can ascend. (If I'm being dull, it's because I'm out of practice with this path).

sunman: I agree. Alchemy too holds the truth, (because, as you say, everything does).

Perhaps we see reality as if reflected in the fragements of a broken mirror? Each appears to hold but a tiny piece of a confusing kalidoscope. So it seems as if truth is myriad. But with correct alignment we find it is not. It is simple.
