Flea bombs are the easiest to use.
1) treat the cat using a vet approved topical flea treatment - Frontline, Advantage
2) Raid flea bombs work great, get enough for each room in your home, check package for amount/size of room
3) use a spray to get under furniture, bombs don't always get everywhere.
4) once the cats been treated, gotten the flea bombs and sprayed under the furniture, open all closet doors and dresser draws, turn off the gas at the main valve (you may need help with this), turn heat off if possible or turn it down to about 55, remove all other pets, turn off fish tanks and cover with plastic tightly, get kids out.
5) cover your mouth and nose with a cloth or mask -respirator if you have one
6) starting with the furthermost room from the front door set each one off -make sure to point can away from your face. Go as quickly as you can and get out fast shutting the door behind you tightly.
7) wait at least 2-4 hours whatever the package recommends. Still keeping your children and pets out, go and open up your house, turn on the heat- leave gas off for now. Fumes are too strong from bombs wait till smell is mostly gone. Uncover tanks and turn filters back on. Fumes usually take an hour or so and you'll be fine to bring all back in.
8) all counters, tables and other surfaces will need to be wiped down, wash bedding also.
9) vacuum, vacuum, and vacuum
10) if the above fails call in a professional

If money isn't a huge problem-exterminator. Otherwise, treat the cat -I've had the best luck with Advantage-and bomb the house. Then continue to treat cat's bedding and upholstered furniture with premises spray containing IGR every few days for about a week. It' a lot of work but then continue to treat the cat and it will never happen again.
For all the people saying get rid of the cat and blaming the poor animal-do you think the cat deliberately got infested with parasites? This is OUR job as pet owners to protect the defenseless pet from these hazards. This person was probably not informed how FAST fleas multiply and what a problem they can become, but is at least willing to make the effort rather than blame the easiest scapegoat. Also, once the house is infested getting rid of the animal will not solve the problem, you heartless a**holes!

Flea bomb definitely. Choose one day for entire family and cat to be away from the house when you do this. Depending on the size and floor plan of your house, you will probably need several canisters. Do it in the morning so that by evening it is safe for everyone to be back home.

Several days before you flea bomb, apply a good flea medication on your cat. "Advantage" is the one I used. It kills any flea that gets on your cat. That will take care of fleas on your cat but you still need to treat your environment, so the flea bomb. After flea bomb, vacuum regularly several times a week.

Do NOT spray your cat with bug spray - as has been suggested!!
Just ask your vet for a bottle of Frontline (it's expensive, but it's the best on the market) and read the instructions. It'll solve your flea problem quick quick!!

Call an exterminator to rid your house of fleas and keep your cat on Frontline. This will prevent re-infestation and can be purchased through your vet or at Petco and Petsmart.

Call an exterminator. They will spray - Worldwide is a company that will do it without using the really bad stuff. The stuff you use yourself from the store is not effective & probably worse for you. If they know you have a current issue they will probably come out right away.

Uhhh OK lady if there was a pet in my home that had fleas and they were so bad they were biting me and my children I would........ummm......GET RID OF THE CAT! That is so gross! Why would you want tiny little bugs running around the place all over your children!!! The fleas should have been taken care of as soon as you found out or thought somthing wasnt right about the cat, not left until the whole family is infested. Take some pride in your self, your home and your children.

Put the cat to sleep, if you know what I mean.
Or
Buy extra strong cat shampoo.
Put you cat in a box with head sticking out, then spray the body with bug spray.
