A person can still get cervical cancer even if one has had a total hysterectomy.

Likewise, a person can still have a breast cancer recurrence in the ribs even if they have had a total masectomy.

However, a positive pap smear can indicate other conditions besides cervical cancer.

Talk to your Mom's doctor.

No

Women sometimes have a hysterectomy for cervical cancer.

In a total hysterectomy, the cervix is taken out and there is usually no cervix left for a cancer to grow in.

However, there is an operation called a subtotal hysterectomy where most of the uterus is removed and a small bit of cervix is left behind. Cervical cancer can form in this remnant of cervix - usually at rates equal to the normal population incidence.
