Truthfully, a child can be named anything the parents want to - even if it was something as extreme as a name that didn't have their last name.

As far as a mother wanting a different last name for the child than the father's...that usually happens when a couple is not married and are not getting along anymore.

Depending on which State you live in, but yes the mother can put the baby in her name. Some States require that once the father signs the birth certificate than the baby receives the father's name if you two aren't married. If you are married the child must go with the husbands last name.

Yep one of the easyest ways for A Female to due this is,
List the father un known. Now if she is married & useing Maiden sir name and living in the state of Washington, the child is given the sir name of the father. Now if she devorices him prior to the birth and she dos or dose not list her Exhusdand on the birth certificate the child is given the fathers last name.
only way out for her to use her maiden name in washington is to list the father unknown. As for other states I am guessing the are just like wa.

Yes. A lot of single mothers do this. Actually, you can put down any name on the birth certificate you want. Some people can't decide on a last name, so they make up one. LOL

Yes. It is quite common for single mothers to do this. It just has to have the same name as one of the parents...you could not give it a random last name or anything.

Well, in some other countries, this can be possible. And, I think, a child, before turning 18, should always be in her mother's custody. So, having the mother's surname, is indeed, possible!
