Please note, this info applies to an adult...not an infant. Treatment for an infant is totally different!

The treatment depends on the cause. First, you can wait a while to see if the duct clears up on it's own. Most will resolve without medical intervention if no infection is present. However, while you wait, keep a close eye on the situation. If it appears to be getting worse or your eyes are watering, the time for waiting is over...go to a doctor.

If it is an infection, antibiotics will be needed. If it is due to injury, the size or shape of the tear duct or an increase in tissue growth, surgery will be needed to repair it. Tests may have to be done to see why the duct got inflamed. If you have already had the problem for a week, your eye or eyes are watering or your symptoms have worsened, see your doctor or eye doctor now.
