Well, to put it bluntly, we don't know.

The scientific community has found no real purpose for it; there is only specualtion.

Some say that we yawn to refresh the air in our lungs. When we are at rest, we bearly use our full lung capacity...and a yawn does. So it more effectively recycles the air in your lungs.

Another reason is that it is connected to specific states; such as boredom or tiredness. That it's a way of your unconcious mind telling your concious mind that you are feeling those things.

There's not much research being done on it at the moment...so we may never really find out.

Contrary to common belief, yawning is not directly related to tiredness. Yawning happens when there is a low in the oxygen to the brain (This tends to happen when tired but not exclusively) We do it because when we yawn we take a deeper breath in and this increases the oxygen we take in and therefore the oxygen to the brain.

There is no solid proof to why one yawns, only theories. One theory is that your body needs more oxygen. One may think that this is true while you are in a closed room. However, how do one explains yawning in the great outdoors?

One of the mysteries of life, thus far!

You yawn because your brain is not getting enough oxygen!! when you yawn it opens up your air passages and therefore getting more oxygen to your brain!!
