i tried protein bars, but its really expensive to eat as many as you need to gain weight. I had better luck with protein powder. its far more economical and you can mix it into a lot of different things.
I was able to gain 22 lb. in 4 months by drinking a glass of whole milk mixed with protein powder 2 times a day.Combined with a strict workout, the weight i gained was not fat, it was solid flesh and muscle
