I know most pitbulls will not attack someone breaking into your house but when would the common pitbull not trained to attack just a normal loved dog defend its owner.

Most dogs of any breed will attempt to protect their owner, about the time they are mature (2 years, or so) The exception is, if it is very timid as an adult dog..

The sweetest dog I ever knew was a pitbull and the only time I ever saw him bear his teeth and bark was when a drunk guy pushed his owner. When I lived with the dog and owner I used to loose my keys all the time and have to climb through the window, which was when I realized the dog would not save us cause instead of growling at me or barking as a broke in he laid on the couch and simply watched. I have heard from other people that said the only time their pitbull has been even slightly agressive was when someone was directly being agressive to their owner.

If they feel their beloved owner is threatened they will defend eg if someone is yelling at their person in a scary manner. That is when my dobes spring into action. I was out the front (enclosed yard) when some woman walked past with her mini mutts and my girls barked, so the woman stood there and yelled at me over my fence about my 'dangerous dogs' that should be put down, and i really mean yelling and screaming almost hysterical, my girls started growling at her, so she called the cops. Thankfully my neighbours were in their yard and saw everything and told the cops what happened. I really dont know what would happen had they not been behind the fence but the only person they have ever bitten was my ex boyfriend who hit me in front of the dogs.

i would say some dogs, not all will defend you if you are in a panic or terrified. they will sense this from you and react to what is causing it. but not all dogs, including pits will do this. my heeler is about self preservation and i really think she would say good luck to ya and run off, lol.

I guess it's probably when it see's a child or elderly person. This seems to be the way.
Or maybe when it sees another dog - These dogs are dangerous and should be banned.
