Set yourself a goal, find a partner and go at it in small increments.

I am a rock climber and mountaineer, and my goal is usually to build stamina. So, I run with the explicit intent of building my stamina and increasing the amount of stress that my heart and lungs can take. When I run, this is a great motivator and helps me concentrate. If I am not in shape to finish 10 miles, I am probably not going to climb anytime soon, so I run with that goal in mind.

Secondly, having a partner usually means you have each other to keep the other person in check. Tends to work out very well -- my girlfriend and I keep tabs on each other, and it works out great (especially when the other person "cheats").

And finally, start with small increments -- i.e., if 5 minutes is all you can do, run for 5 minutes. Then take a break for another 5-10 minutes and run for 5 more minutes. See how long you can keep this up. Or if you are more comfortable with distance, run for a mile. Stop for a while, and continue and see how much you can do till you max out.

Once you have reached your peak (say, three 5 minute runs or 3 miles in all), do this for a week. Then, set yourself a higher goal -- i.e. try running four 5 minute runs or 4 miles. Keep this up and you will notice that you get progressively better.

And try doing things like stretching and other small exercises before you run -- running straight without any warm-up is a bad thing.

And finally, your diet and your food habits play a great role in how much you can endure. I am a vegetarian, and this has greatly helped me keep in excellent shape. I also ensure that I drink a lot of water and my salt/sugar level is optimum.

Remember that the human body is a machine that needs a lot of things to work together for something to happen. And the more you push it, the better it becomes.

Honestly, I found that the easiest way to EASE into running is this....FIRST start walking (it's so much easier) but do it at a good pace. You won't feel over-exherted. Then once you feel it getting easier, do sessions of walking/running. At the track, walk a quarter mile, run a quarter mile. If it's on the street, walk for two telephone poles, and run to two more. So an and so forth until finally, you will find it get easier and easier to the point you can run without stopping and feeling completely dizzy or worn out.

You must accept that getting fit takes time. If you have spent your life in the couch, what would you expect?

When you see the spots, start walking, when they disappear, try jogging again.

Take a half an hour walk everyday, try to blend your walking with jogging every other day.

In time, you will find that jogging becomes easier and weight disappears from your body.

Start slowly and increase gradually. That is the secret. Practice makes perfect. If you are 40+, you should consult a doctor before taking up jogging.

Join a highschool team or something. The main thing people need is something to make them go do it.
