Is it ok to get a tattoo if my daughter who's 19 months still nurses 1-2x per day - usually at night before she goes to bed? I've contacted my daughter's pedi, and the lactation center at the hospital that she was born at say that it's ok to do so long as the equipment that they use is sterilized and new. (needles and autoclaved equipment). I wanted to find out. I THINK that I told my artist that I was still nursing but the appt was made almost 6 months ago and so I do not recall the conversation at this time.

Also - in terms of tattoo prep once I get there...they said that they open the needles in front of me and such....equipment wise, what is supposed to be autoclaved and what does not need autoclaving? I am not sure if there is tubing connected to the tattoo machine, but is that supposed to be autoclaved? Like, what is autoclaved and what isn't - just so that I know..

thanks a bunch!

re: the nursing thing...is it like a "don't ask, don't tell" sort of thing?

the needles will be brand new and will come in a package that looks like this:

the tubes will have been autoclaved and they look like this: (my artists are covered in rubber and not that little metal part)

all of the equipment should be opened while the artist has gloves on and you should see he/she clean off the surfaces with a cleaner and put down a sheet of hospital grade material to put all of their equipment on so that it can be thrown away in front of you. i hope that helps! good luck with your tattoo!

I am assuming that you are refering to wheter youre child could become ill via the breast milk, as a result of you putting ink under your skin then lactating, and the answer is a resounding NO, If You were to contract AIDs or hepatitus from the process yes youre child would no doubt contract the illness as well. Unless you know how to look at an autoclave packet and check to see if the colour has changed correctly you will have to take the tattooist's wod for it. but everything he/she uses should be autoclaved even single use stuff is autoclaved after its made. If You are concerned about sterility talk to the tattooist about youre concerns, if he/she avoids the issue feel free to get up and walk out.
