I have not heard this so far. If you can tell me in which province of India this is practised I may try to get some details. In Telugu Brahmin's families the ceremonies conclude on 12th day. and all relatives leave the place only the family members remain. during the entire mourning period of 12 days they wont lit a lamp in front of the God. On 13th day they lit a lamp make a sweet dish with rice, sugar and milk and eat it as prasad.

differs from sect to sect amongnst bramins, As you know the ceremonies are very long and lasts 13 days for some brahmin commumities. I have not heard of this sugarcane feature.
