I want to know how to keep the dog from harming my wife's cats and I also don't want him chasing them either, when he starts to get older. Also will he kill my dads sheep or calves?

Will he harm my Dad's sheep or calves? I just now the breed has a hard time with cats and other small fury animals. I also have a 2 year old son and he loves the dog. I love Weimaraners and had 2 as a kid growing up and hunted with them. This puppy was a surprise birthday gift. In college my roomate had one and it grew up with his girlfriends cat and then one day after he turned 2 years old he just killed it before we could stop it.

he will not do these things if you teach him to respect you. when he starts to chase or do anything like play or whatever you see as a threat to the cats, tell him NO in a firm voice. don't yell or be angry. don't panic or he will panic too. these are very smart dogs and easily trained in the right hands. if you don't live with your dad take regular visits there while he's still a pup. keep him on lead and let him explore the cattle and sheep. when he starts to get excited, tell him no and make him sit. have him neutered around 6 months of age. this will help curb intact male aggressive behavior. enroll him in a training class and be consistent and patient with the training skills taught. anytime he's around the cats, calves, sheep, etc...be with him so you can correct incorrect behavior immediately. if he learns from an early age what to expect every time he gets overly excited he will learn not to exhibit these types of behaviors. training of yourself and the dog are your best answer here. good luck.

I have always had dogs and cats together. 10 weeks old is a good time o socialize him. He will be growing up with the cats so he should get use to them being there pretty fast. If the cats are older they might be the ones that have a hard time adjusting. I'll bet they end up playing together and being buddies. Mine always have been. As for your Dads sheep and calves, like I said start socializing him now, while he is young and you can control him. Let him know they are off limits!!

no. he will act like a puppy, though, so you can't blame him if he pisses the cats off. he'll learn sooner or later, thru bops on the nose, etc, not to mess with them.
if you think he's a killer, then why did you get him? not all dogs kill things every chance they get. it's how they are trained. chances are, they will get along fine, after a few fights.
he IS a puppy, so don't treat him as an adult dog. no hitting. the cats will train him. he will chase them, but cats are resilient. don't flip out everytime you see them running around. make sure he has all his shots, and crate training is a must, no matter what size he is.
good luck.

NO. I have always had both dogs and cats and they have been great pals and even play with each other. Make it clear to your puppy the cats are members of your family pack. If he is too ruff with the cats they will let him know with a swat across the face.

You can teach him to protect and respect the other farm animals.

As long as you teach him to not do those things, he won't do them. Dogs are very smart and they learn quickly be firm but don't be to mean, they don't respond to constant yelling and when they are good... I'm sure you know this but praise him.

by the way weimaraner's are cute!

if your wife's two cats are already grown they will train thepuppy for you, no need for you to do anything
but you will have to teach it not to chase the livestock, it won't be difficult, they are smart dogs

Not if you exercise proper discipline and authority over him to teach him that it is unacceptable behavior.
