I had a cat, for 13 years - he was an indoor kitty. But he got out of the house in about early 2005 he was gone for a whole night. When he came back he appeared to be ok, until we noticed some lumps a few days later on his back end. After a while the bumps popped and puss came out. We took him to the vet that night, he had got bit by 2 cats. :( My poor little baby. We got that fixed but a few months after that he started getting very very sick. Throwing up his cat food. He would hibernate in the bathtub and just lay there, he was losing a lot of wait and fast his eyes were kind of pussish he had like guk in his eye and they were kind of sunk into his head, so we took him to the vet and she only felt his belly but said it felt like he had tumors in there and should put him to sleep. They did, but I never felt comfortable with it. Maybe cause there was no proof, I knew he was sick and either way it was best to put him down but I wish I knew what might of truly been wrong...

Bites are a good way to spread FIV, but cats generally live for years with FIV not showing symptoms. It kills them indirectly, through opportunistic infections. From the timespan, and from what the vet said, I would not think FIV would be most likely.
You could have spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars running tests and biopsies that MAY have told you what was wrong with your cat, but if he was suffering and you knew he needed to be put down, what would you have gained?
Yes, I think you should get a new cat. It might be a good time to start over with a new vet, as well. If you were left with so many questions, it does not sound as if your vet is a very good communicator or has very good client skills.

Sorry about your kitty. Most times, they will die of an infection b/c their little immune systems are worn down. My cat has feline leukemia/hiv, and if he gets an infection I have to put him on antibiotics. But I always worry that he will develop a tumor or something. I guess the only way you would know for sure how your kitty dies is an autopsy. But at least you know he's not suffering anymore. And the best thing, you can get a new cat.

Hard to tell. But it is suspicious that he wnt down really fast after being bit... but then a "few months" had passed, so perhaps it had nothing to do with the cat bite. Cancer can cause rapid loss of weight, I do know that. If it was feline AIDS, a blodd test would have shown that. At any rate, I think you made the right decision to stop kitty's suffering. Don't feel guilty about the time kitty escaped and got bit... I really think that his final illness had nothing to do with that episode.
I am sooo sorry for your loss.

It could have been either-the vet didn't do tests because it sounds like the cat was suffering and there was little hope. Thirteen is not a bad lifespan for a cat after all, especially since it sounds like it was a good life with lots of love. I am sorry he had to suffer and for your loss. I say definitely get another baby to love-there are so many that need a good home like yours!

awww honey, that is life. Cats, on average, live some 14 to 20 years but I guess the time of your cat was just up. I'm sorry he had to go.
You did the right thing in taking him to the vet, and the vet did the right thing in ending his suffering. The vet is trained in these matters.
And if you feel you are ready to care for another cat, go for it!

I would say cancer! I had a cat die from FIV about 5 years ago and she had lived with it for about 5 years! My friend recently had a cat die from cancer and her symptoms are more what you were decribing. I waited about a year before I got a new cat. But if you have any other cats and you are unsure about it being FIV get your other cats tested before you bring home a new one!

Sorry for your loss. It's ok to get a new cat if you are ready. Just make sure you get one that will fit with your family and other pets.
