...but can you give any tips for a lady to turn down a guy gently without totally bursting his ego bubble? Ex. if the guy is persistent and she doesn't want to be mean. He's not obnoxious, just a bit of a pest.

just tell him in very plain terms that you are not interrested. being nice to him gives the impression that you are playing hard to get, and can lead to more advances. and possibly (depending on his mental state) a stalker situation.

Anything between what Chris G and Jack D said will be just fine. Make it polite but in no uncertain terms. Lets face it. If he cares about you a lot it's going to hurt no matter what you do so you will have to anticipate something regardless how you handle it so just be direct and leave no indication there is any further relationship available.

well i have never rejected anyone but have been on the other side and am glad that you are being thoughtful not to hurt the guy.there are many polite ways you can put down a guys demnds for this one especially :].just tell him you are gay.that always works.or to be more serious ttell a lie.nothing wrong in it as long as it is helpful.tell him you are i don't engaged to your childhood friend and take along a gay guy not a straight one cause then the problem will shift to him.he will br a little hurt thats something unavoidable but not as hurt as he would be if you tell him to **** off or something or get him beaten up.

Pull him to the side in a social setting(i.e. lots of people around) and say to him in a lowered voice: "Look. I don't want to hurt your feelings or embarass you, which is why I'm saying this to you in private instead of outloud. I'm not interested in dating or having an intimate relationship with you. If you'd like to remain codial, please stop asking me out/pestering me, or things will get unpleasant. I'd rather that not happen, wouldn't you?"

I'm ok with that...really...She fell out of window but she did almost hit the 10th floor deck and barely missed the pool.

you can't. Take it from one who knows you have to make up some lie..ex. I'm gay (just discovered) i'm moving and we should do whats best and stop seeing each other 'cause it hurts to much. If you don't want to lie then your just gonna have to break the dudes heart but remember..he will live. he will go on.

Just tell him plainly, calmly, and in the nicest tone possible that you are not interested in pursuing any kind of intimate relationship with him.
Be direct.

Politely tell him that you are not interested in getting involved in a romantic relationship, but that you would appreciate his friendship instead. Most likely, he will move on.
