Mecca is the holiest city in Islam and no non-Muslims are allowed to enter because the Koran calls them "nijs" or "impure".

Rome is the holiest city of the Roman Catholic Church and is home to tens of thousands of Muslims and the center of a great mosque. http://uk.encarta.msn.com/media_1041500181_761556259_-1_1/Mosque_in_Rome.html

Doesn't this show a great difference between Muslim tolerance and Western tolerance? Is this yet another Muslim double standard?

The Vatican is actually the holiest of all catholic sites. Also, Rome is a thriving metropolis, Mecca is more of simply a holy site.

I have been to the Vatican a number of times and have witness people visiting there from many different backgrounds and faiths. I am fairly sure I would never see that at Mecca...nor would I be allowed in. Just a difference in how religions are practiced.

Rome also has a better nightlife.

Back up Rome a few hundred years and you have Mecca, in terms of tolerance though.

Maybe you should stop trying to make waves in how bad Islam is. Just because they want to keep it an Islamic holy city doesn't mean they are intolerant.
