Yes, so when they say stuff just quote the bible.
"When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property." Exodus 21:20-21

Some people take scripture out of context. (I know that sounds cliche) But really the Bible has checks on itself. For instance. If someone takes the scripture Eph. 6:5-9 where it talks about slaves being respectful of their masters and working hard just as if you were working for Christ, it isn't promoting slavery. It is simply giving guidelines for Christians to follow on how to live like Christ and be examples to hopefully influence their masters. The rest of scripture acts a check to show how God feels about slavery. God does not approve of it. He values all humans the same. He regulated it in the old testament, but he definitely did not institute it. You can never take one verse without reading before and after it. You also have to understand the principles behind every verse. Also you must take into consideration how it fits in with other verses. Put it together and you start to get a complete picture of what God is like. Sure people have taken a verse and ran with it, but they were wrong because they would ignore all the verses that contradicted what they were saying. So if someone does try to justify something with the Bible, make sure it goes with the whole Bible, and is not just one verse.

People can quote out of context anything in the bible and claim that its true, the thing is that you must read it for yourself.

Not if both you or the person with whom your are arguing actually understand the nature and the context of all the various types of scripture.
Otherwise, you can probably do quite nicely by throwing verses of scripture around like hand grenades.

Yes if it's taken out of context...have seen many "churches" based their efforts off of one verse taken out of context....
The current ecumenical tide is one such example...they (participating churches) love to use Paul's words (out of context) here.
1Co 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
But why don't they also teach???
(1Co 11:18) For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
(1Co 11:19) For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
What is proper context?? The ENTIRE word of God!!!
2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

The real deal is, if you have it in your mind to do such, you will do it, but, REMEMBER, there is one God Almighty who knows all you/I do, so it is better not to do such a thing. Even one of the men who wrote the N.I.V. translation of the Bible repented because he saw that he was wrong.

Certainly. Except you have to do one other thing and that is, most likely, take something entirely out of context.

People do. But, only if you take it out of its proper context and twist it to suit your own purposes.
