I'm making corned beef and cabbage for some people. The only vinegar I have here is some werid heinz apple cider vinegar. I'm pretty sure the stuff my grandma uses is red. What do I look for at the grocery store? Or is what I have ok?

Thanks in advance.

You can be more fussy about type of vinegar when you are making a vinegarette, pickling, or other situation when the vinegar is going to be a dominant flavor. For corned beef and cabbage, it doesn't matter much, though the stuff you have is probably the best. Bon appetit!!

I've never put vinegar in corn beef and cabbage but I would think red wine or apple cider vinegar either one would work.

When using vinegar with cabbage I like apple cider, but I really prefer butter, a sprinkle of salt and pepper. But what about the potatoes?

I pickled my liver years ago so its well preserved, so I like chips (I am Scottish) with vinegar, never tried it on any veg. except peas. I have heard that cider vinegar is good for you so when I am in a healthy mode (not often), I mix honey, local of course, with cider vinegar and hot water. Have no idea what its supposed to do but the honey helps the hayfever. If somebody told me horse's dung was good for the complexion God knows what I would do????????

Go for it. Cabbage and apples complement one another very nicely.

There are people who can only cook by using a recipe. There are people who use a recipe as written the first time they make something, but make changes to it to make it their own the next time around. There are people who can cook from scratch without a written recipe, and there are people who can develop whole new recipes.

Stretch your wings and adapt the recipe. It's the first stage of really cooking.

Plain white vinegar is best. Can add a small pinch of sugar to it.

you can add a bit of fennel seed, if you have it, to the pot and this will give a nice flave to your CB & C as well!
