MoD have got a terrible employer record. 2 examples from a few years ago;-
Twins on a ship in Malta, father dies in Birmingham, UK. Told only one could be flown home to attend funeral, and they had to decide which. How heartless can you get?
I was on a naval shore base during the main leave period. My son was born premature; put in an incubator. He also had jaundice and breathing difficulties. The hospital asked me to attend for the last rites. I was told I couldn't be spared for the day (I went anyway, and an understanding officer didn't report the fact. The son grew into a strapping lad.)
Would you work for this employer who puts troops in Afghanistan and Iraq - yet doesn't supply them with the tools to do the job, leaving them to buy their own kit or scrounge from other nations troops?

I Serve in the RAF, but I agree that sometimes it's shocking when the MOD deny compassionate leave to individuals. We are under funded and under-equipped and are told to to things well beyond our capability (like fight a war on two fronts while defending the UK!)

We need to nip this in the bud before it's too late!

This is not a new thing, every war that Britain has been involved in and resulted in casualties has been the same. I think this is because of our class system, where as if you are a private you are dispensable, and should you receive a wound and unable to fight, then you are of no use to them, and you are cast aside Then you become a liability to the state. If on the other hand your a Sandhurst trained officer and you are unfortunately wounded, the MOD will see you and your family are looked after.
After the 2nd world war German, American and French soldiers were better looked after than our guys
As for our guys fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan today, well i think it a shame that they are not properly equipped to do the job they are asked to do, and I'd advise them to keep their head down and just do their tour of duty
For these reason i would not fight for this country and would not want my children to either. Glad your son made it.

if i was to be a solider i would rather be a private soldier with good money so i could afford the best weapons and equipment.

i do support our troops but as you said if u don't have the right tools for the job then it is pointless even showing up.

like trying to change a wheel of a car with a screw driver.

on the other hand this is why the British army are probably the best. we have to make use of limited funding which means that their skills have to be more than of an American solider who has everything at his disposal. even a MC Donald's on a war ship.

I personally would not at this present time. But i guess this question varies from person to person. Some people love their country and would be more than happy to put their lives on the line for rule Britainia. But I guess the majority of people who will not join the army is for the reason of being in a place of comfort and not under the command of superiors. But like I siad before we all are individuals whats good for dick is not for harry.

I used to be part of the armed forces, and it was pretty much a decent job, used to work with "computer programming", at least, that was the official title, but the systems we used were relativly good, and we used to just play games half the day anyhow.

The only reason I joined the armed forces was because I'd just left college, and had a few months before uni, they was aware of this, and hired me regardless based upon my resume.

I think it's a rotten shame that our brave Armed Services have such a cold hearted, uncaring, penny pinching bunch in charge of them. It used not to be so bad, so I can only assume that it has become politicised.
