Maybe he loves her and sees this as a chance to prove it by standing by her during a time when she needs it. I think it's a bit foolish since the baby's dad isn't that far out of the picture.

I am in that situation right now. The father of the child is a complete dirt bag as far as I am concerned and not fit to be the father of any child. He is now out of state and in some big legal issues. As long as he stays away all will be good. The mother, about 7 months along now, is someone that I have known for 11 years and have always cared for and she has never had a problem coming to me for help or just to talk. I know her situation better then anyone else and I will be there to support her and the child since the father can/will not help.
To answer your question, it would have to be up to the individual relationship that the non-father has with the mother.

Hail to King of the Hill!!
Not me personally, I don't want to be a rebounce & I don't want a left-over-used woman after some guy had already released his dirty seeds inside her.
Any guy who's willing to be with a woman who is pregnant by another man, then HE IS A LOW-BORNED DIRTY DOG WHO DOES NOT HAVE ANY SELF DIGNITY OR RESPECT.
