If somebody said that when I said, "Hello, this is Mario," I'd say, "Sounds like you're having a bad day. I'll call you another time. Cheers." BUT in my heart of hearts, I'd feel I'd been treated rudely. No excuse for rudeness.

hope you don't mind me asking, but is this the same person that said 'what' after answering the phone? well if it is, then that IS a very rude person. maybe it's not the same person, so do this to both. assuming that it's a guy (not that gender matters), tell him that it was rude and tell him why you called and say that you're sorry if you did anything wrong to him, even if you've never did do anything wrong. if you already did the above then you should just forget him. this isn't exactly a foolproof plan or anything but i'd give the same kind of advice to my friends anyway.

Yes, it is rude. They sound paranoid, or maybe you just neglected to call for such a long time that they thought you did not like them anymore. You should've just said lightly, "nothing more than to hear you are well!" and then laugh and change the subject. Make a point to never ask them for anything, then.

It is a rude and abrasive way to answer the phone. But the person may not mean it towards you and could just be having a bad day, or they think you might be using them, investigate the situation.

It depends on the time of your call. If it's an unholy hour, or late at night, or midnight, or past midnight, or wee hours of the morning, it may sound unfriendly but not rude.

If it's not, then yes, definitely, it's rude.

I think it depends on the tone of that person's voice. However people really should say hello first and then ask what you need.

This sounds like a response to someone that only calls when they need a favour or money.

Are you guilty of that?

i agree, it seems like the person you called thinks that you only call if you need something. perhaps you do. if you only call when you need something instead of calling to just see how they are doing or to talk, they will come to expect your calls will be needy.....
