Answering the phone by saying, "What?" instead of "Hello?" is EXTREMELY rude. Do yourself a favor and don't call that person anymore. Call someone who shows you common courtesy instead.

Seems rude to me too. It sounds like the person was taken by surprise, and didn't know what to say. Also, if it was a guy, we men are often not well equipped to handle "out of the blue" calls. Also, some people expect that if you call after not being in touch for a while that the caller wants something from them. Of course, we could speculate endlessly, but it does sound like they just said "WHAT?!" to startle you, and give themselves a chance to think.

if this is your friend he/she is probably angry or if its someone with whom you had a brief rendezvous with then is utterly rude.the only way you can retaliate to such a behavior is to ask back - if i were you i would be a little rude too,but the decent thing to do is to ask them why they are being so rude because you are trying to get back in touch with them and it has been i don't know years, months or decades.i am sure they will realize that they have offended you and they will come around and everything will forgiven. always be open your feelings especially to people you are close to.

i know what you're saying and yes it's definitely rude. they should be like "hey, what's up?" or "how have you been?" instead you get a "what?"....that's totally rude.

If they are deaf, "What?" may be a legitimate question, as in "What did you say?" Otherwise, it sounds curt, snippy, and rude--if that's what they say instead of, "Hello."
