The sheriff enforces law in unincorporated areas of the county, and the police enforce the law in their city.

The police are the general regulation enforcement for that city. The sheriff's workplace is a general regulation enforcement employer for any areas interior the county no longer served by using a police branch, and likewise a secondary regulation enforcement employer for any cities in the county that have police departments. The sheriff's workplace additionally runs the county prison. A police branch is headed by using a first-rate of Police, who's appointed by using city officers -- frequently the two the mayor, city supervisor, or an elected board. A sheriff's workplace is headed by using a Sheriff, who's an elected valid interior the county.

There isn't any power difference besides area jurisdiction.
Usually the City police department patrols inside city limits, while the Sheriffs Dept will patrol areas within a county, but outside city limits.

Can't answer for Florida but in Wisconsin, "Sheriffs and Sheriff's Deputies" are typically county-level law enforcement people. "Police" are city and town. The state patrol has "troopers."

All three have similar law-enforcement powers and responsibilities. Typically, police operate within the city or town limits, Sheriff's deputies operate within a particular county but outisde the city/town borders and the troopers operate on state and federal highways and on state lands.

My mother lives in Clearwater, Pinellas county Florida. There's a ton of Pinellas County squads on the roads but there are also Clearwater police. I'm sure they both have "police powers."

They are the same. Sheriff patrols either unincorporated areas or city and towns who contract for their service.
The only actual requirement of a Sheriff is to maintan a Jail. BUt most Sheriff Departments have a patrol division.
