I understand what you're saying. Seems like anyone who calls themselves a 'Christian' but does anything mean/unsavory is suddenly labeled as 'not a true Christian'. It drives me crazy. If that's really the case, then none of them are 'true' Christians. Apparently, everyone passes themselves off as a true Christian until something bad about them surfaces, that's when some other people start trying to say that person is a fake. It's a lame way of defending a religion if you ask me. I think some people over use the true/not true thing.

Counterfeit Christianity is probably the best description I can give for a cult. Counterfeit Christianity is an imitation of real Christianity. Bible terms like "Jesus Christ, Resurrection, Salvation, and Atonement" are used by the Cult, but the various cult groups have assigned entirely different meanings to these terms.
Like counterfeit money which is sometimes difficult to detect, so it is difficult to detect counterfeit Christianity, since it looks like the real thing. Experts examining counterfeit money often hold it up to a strong light and look for identifying marks. Counterfeit Christianity also has identifying marks, which can be seen when, held up to an even stronger light, the light of God's word, the bible.
We are at an advantage if we know what to expect from a cult. Cultists are very well trained to appear "Christian", and indeed believe they are the true churches, and you need the deliverance! Therefore, be bold and ask the question, "do you believe the group you represent is the only true church on the face of the earth?"
If they reply that they are, or if they are evasive, making remarks like "Well, every church has a measure of truth but...", you have made an early detection of a Cultist.
Every true Christian, if asked the same question, regardless of his denomination, would reply that the true church is comprised of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and HE (not some organization) is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE, (John 14:6). No legitimate denomination would claim that they alone and their members have salvation exclusively, but the cults (the counterfeits) do.

Do you know how bank tellers are trained to recognize counterfeit bills?
They aren't.
They are trained to recognize real ones.
Here are 10 qualities of true Christians
1.Worships the only true God, Jehovah.—Deuteronomy 6:4, 5; Psalm 146:5-10; Matthew 22:37, 38.
2. Access to God by means of Christ Jesus.—John 17:3, 6-8; 1 Timothy 2:5, 6; 1 John 4:15.
3. Teaches and practices unselfish love.—John 13:34, 35; 1 Corinthians 13:1-8; 1 John 3:10-12.
4. Remains untainted by worldly politics and conflicts. It is neutral in time of war.—John 18:36; James 1:27.
5. Lets God be true by accepting the Bible as God’s Word.—Romans 3:3, 4; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 1 Thessalonians 2:13.
6. Does not condone war or personal violence.—Micah 4:2-4; Romans 12:17-21; Colossians 3:12-14.
7. Successfully unites people of every race, language, and tribe. It does not preach nationalism or hatred, but love.—Isaiah 2:2-4; Colossians 3:10, 11; Revelation 7:9, 10.
8. Advocates serving God, not for selfish gain or a salary, but out of love. It does not glorify men. It glorifies God.—1 Peter 5:1-4; 1 Corinthians 9:18; Matthew 23:5-12.
9. Proclaims the Kingdom of God as man’s sure hope, not some political or social philosophy.—Mark 13:10; Acts 8:12; 28:23, 30, 31.
10Teaches the truth regarding God’s purpose for man and the earth. It does not teach the religious lies of immortal soul and eternal torment in hell. It teaches that God is love.—Judges 16:30; Isaiah 45:12, 18; Matthew 5:5; 1 John 4:7-11; Revelation 20:13, 14.
I could quote these scriptures but it would make the answer overly long. Feel free to look them up if you really want an answer to your question.

Jesus said that you would know them by their fruits. True Christians will be known by the way they live and behave. They will be honest and have integrity. They are joyful and forgiving, always seeing the best in everyone. They don't criticize. They seek God's will in every matter and have an on going relationship with God. They are happy to serve God in any way that He calls them to. But many Christians are not perfect, and they are going through a process of growth. Sometimes they may slip and fall. But a true Christian will always be under the conviction of the Holy Spirit so when He falls, he will be aware of it and repent, so that he continues to grow. If the Christian doesn't grow or show the fruits of the Spirit in his growth you know that he is a talker but not a walker in Christ.

Hypocrisy is an ugly thing.
Too bad there are so many people calling themselves Christians when they are not acting like it.
Jesus had a problem with these kind of people, who portray themselves as good religious folk but inside they were wicked.
Sooner or later people will blurt out of their mouths what they really believe in their hearts.
See a true believer in Christ will not practice sin anymore.
Everyone sins, but true believers don't practice it.
For example a physician practices medicine and if he's a good physician he'll try to help and cure all his patience.
But periodically he will lose some not that he wasn't trying to help them. If he's compassionate he'll feel remorse.
That's the difference between true believers and non,
one practices to do right and not sin (10 commandments and love God and your neighbor as yourself), and when he does he feels remorse. and the other doesn't.

U gotta remember that Jesus instituted a church, He gave a set of teachings and clear instructions as to how to practice a true relationship with Him.
Go to different churches and see where there origins are...you will come across a group of Christians that have their teachings originating 100, 500, 1000, 1500 years ago...but somehow, that is not old enough, because they do not have the apostolic links...there are churches however that hold teachings and doctrinal practices that are 2000 years old (as old as christianity itself) and have had links to the Apostles whom Jesus had taught and instructed Himself...
Just as a tip...Try the Catholic or Orthodox Churches...that would be a good pointer for you.
As for labling fake or non-fake Christians...well...I find it hard to find non-apostolic churchs as 'fake'...because they too hold same beliefs as the church and christian group that I belong too...it is just unfortunate their teachings are 'incomplete', that is all...and that is only because they have lost the apostolic link that I was speaking about.
God bless you my friend, and may he lead you to the path of completeness and perfection with Him.

Jesus told a parable about a farmer who had an enemy that planted weeds in his field. His servants asked if they should go and pluck out all the weeds, but he said no, we'll let them grow up together and then when it's time for the harvest we'll separate the weeds from the wheat and burn all the weeds. So for now, we're just growing together. I don't think it's a good idea to call each other weeds. But we should try to live like Christ by helping others, and calling out hypocrisy when we see it. He also says that by your fruits you shall know them. If we are true Christians, we shall bear good fruit. If you think about how many bear bad fruit, it gives you idea that Jesus was right when he called the path to destruction wide.

I would say that there are lots of people that claim to be Christians, but they have never been born again. They are Christians in words but their lives are full of self service. A Christian can be in sin, so the trick would be to know that person. You need to find out if there is any real fruit in their lives. You need to know if they really understand the seriousness of sin. If they claim to be saved and don't care about their life of sin, there is a good bet that they are not saved. But I would worry about yourself for now, whether you have repented from your sin.

A True Christian is someone who has a relationship with Christ.
It doesn't matter what anybody says, because in the end who is it
that YOU are being guided by? People or Christ himself? No person is perfect. If that was the case we would not have needed
Christ. But yes there are people who call themselves Christians as a way to catagorize their "religion." It is not religion God wants,
It is RELATIONSHIP.Jesus said "follow me..." He never said,"Follow my people." Listen to your heart and GOD will show you the difference.

The best way to tell the fake christians from the real ones was started in the middle ages by the christian church. The fake christians are revealed by boiling them in cauldrons of hot water. If their skin peels off, they are real christians... or fake christians, I can never remember. But the point is that you need to boil anyone thoroughly if you are in doubt.
