Strabismus (see the wiki page) is the medical term for "lazy eye". In the case where strabismus has been present for a long time and the lazy eye goes blind (ie. the brain learns to ignore the input from that eye where the muscles are weak and the image is different from the other stationary/normal eye) ie. Amblyopia, then the person sees only with the normal eye. In this case, they cannot do the magic eye pictures.

However, when this is corrected by patching the good eye and forcing the brain to use the wandering or lazy eye then vision can be normal in both eyes and the patient CAN do the magic eye pictures.
