I have Windows 98 and found that I have Katakana, Hiragana and Kanji already installed. I don't speak Japanese, so I can't say how complete the Kanji set is. It's also got Armenian, Georgian, Oriya, Thai, Gujurati and all sorts of alphabets that I'm unlikely ever to use. There are at least three different fonts that contain the kana: Arial Unicode, Lucida Unicode and Mingu. Windows XP is more advanced than Windows 98, so presumably you'll find them installed on your PC. I'm assuming it's a desk-top, that is. If it's a lap-top, then it probably will not have been installed. If it's a Windows XP desk-top and the Japanese characters are not there, then I suggest you erase the systems disk and instal Windows 98.

Step 1) Go to Control Panel. You can access this from the Start Menu.
2) Click on Date, Time, Language, and Regional options
3) Click on "Add other languages"
4) Check the box next to "Install files for East Asian languages."
5) Click on "Details" under "Text services and input languages."
6) Scroll to "Japanese" under "Input language"
7) Back on the "Regional and language options," click on the "Advanced" tab
8) Make sure all boxes are checked which indicate Japanese.
This should get you set up nicely.
Note: Depending on your system, you may need your XP installation disk to install properly.
