They become infertile at around 7-15 years, but they should not be breed after 5 years.

I know of dogs 15 years old that have had puppies. No dog should have them after 5-6 though and particularly if they haven't had puppies before. Never breed before the second season either.

If you spay/neuter them, they can become infertile at any age past 6 months in females and as early as 10 weeks in males.
That is the only surefire way to make sure a dog is infertile without waiting half their life.

as soon as you have them spayed is the best answer. spaying them will greatly reduce the chance of reproductive cancer such as mammary tumors, and a pyometria where the uterus fills with pus. any dog should not be bred past 5 years of age. but i have seen a 10 year old chihuahua who was pregnant. needless to say she didn't do well during the birth. spaying is how you will prevent this and extend your dog's life and health.

I do not breed them after age 6. They are able to produce babies after that age, but you should not overbreed them. Also, you should not breed them every cycle. Once a year or even every 18 mo is best for the little mamas.
