Just remember to always keep an open mind because there are so many things that it is impossible to know. Also remember that atheism and not believing in the Christian God are not necessarily the same thing.
For what it's worth, I am atheist as well, but I still accept the possibility of God. I have just decided that the idea of a super human being as the all powerful creator of the universe doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I feel the same way as you do, I spent my whole life believing in something that now I am unsure of. I have been told my whole life if I question this I will be condemned to hell. I am not completely convinced atheism is the way to go because of the what if factor and maybe they are wrong too, so that leaves me in limbo, but I no longer feel guilty for feeling this way. Do not fear what you truly believe. This is what I rationalize anyway; if thier truly is a GOD, he cannot blame me for feeling like this, he gave me this brain to reason and if I am wrong well he can forgive me if I admit it afterwords as well. Your fear is only what you you have been brainwashed to believe. Enlighten yourself, find your own answers and do not let the beleifs of others sway your journey. I am happier now that I have accepted that I am uncertain about anything rather than pretending I beleive in something I do not because basically that is all your doing is pretending.

Nothiing to be afraid of...The most important thing is to undersand "WHY" you are an atheist...For me i am an atheist simply because of scientific reasons....The evidence i've discovered because of science refutes any claims of the idea that we were magically brought here by a superbeing. Its alot more elegant and simplistic than that and when one understands it makes total sense. I just couldnt accept the idea that one is an atheist because of all the suffering in the world...That is not a valid reason....I am not a believer in a supernatural being simply because i have no proof of one...If i were to have one shred of evidence then i would be a beliver...hands down.

Why be scared? Are you not sure of your decision? There is nothing scary about not believing in a Creator. In fact, it is quite rational and logical. I dumped Christianity 20 years ago and haven't looked back. It is a silly religion really.

Atheism certainly has the appeal of "certainty," which is also offered by most of the religionists that know the "one true way."
I myself, being uncertain, tend toward agnosticism.

Atheism is becoming increasingly popular in US by those disaffected by the religious politicking that has been gearing up, soon you won't need to feel afraid to come out about it.

Your fear is understandable, considering the vitriol leveled at non-theists.
This animosity is greater than that directed toward many other minorites, even homosexuals.
"a new study... finds that Americans are not fond of atheists and trust them less than they do other groups. The depth of this distrust is a bit astonishing nonetheless."

Of course you are.
That's the whole point of the religious dogma you've been fed your whole life.
However, don't listen to me.
Listen to yourself. You know you shouldn't let fear run your life. If all your religion is giving you is fear, then that's probably a big indicator that something is wrong.
Good luck to you.
And don't worry, you are NOT going to hell.
