We are pcs'ing here in a couple of months and want to move to army base housing (our preference bc it's just easier that way) and we are looking to moving to an installation with upgraded housing or even better, new housing..(far stretch I know). The current base housing we are at is 'upgraded', but the foundation is falling apart and our roof consistently leaks, so preferably something better than that. Any ideas?

For the most part we can pick where we want to go so we are looking somewhere east coast or as far as Kentucky region. Adn yes I know decent army housing is an oxymoron but nothing can be as bad as frickin Hawaii housing it's absolutely ridiculous.

Most places that have built new housing are only opening it to current residents. Basically, they move people into the new houses so they can tear down or remodel the old houses. Your best bet to find new houses is to look for a place that has privatized housing (Carson, Bragg, Polk, Campbell, Wainwright/Richardson I think, lots of places are privatized now).

As far as coming to Kentucky, we're at Campbell and the housing lists are really long. There are new houses here, but they are hard to get into. We were on the 2 bedroom list for 4 months (told that was the wait time) and never got called. We finally gave up. Some of the lists for bigger houses are over a year long. I don't know if there's much new housing at Knox, but I don't think so. I know several people moving there soon and I haven't heard much positive about the housing.

Oh, honey, come to Germany and live in WWII era stairwell housing for a while and then complain to me about your living conditions.

The only other bases I've been on were Ft. Knox (my BIL's townhouse was okay but needed a plumbing repair and the neighbor kids were hellacious), and Ft. Carson in Colorado. I'm not sure what kind of updates they've done at Knox since I was there last, if any. They were actually building a whole bunch of new housing at Carson, and the existing stuff didn't look terrible.

Even if you get a "decent" place on post, you still have to deal with the other soldiers, the wives and their kids. They're currently trying to rennovate the main housing area here to make it nicer, but you can paint the buildings any color you like and replace all the balconies, but you can't take the ghetto out of the people who live there.

never choose a base because of the housing there. if any reason to choose a base i would look at crime rates around neighboring communities, things to do, economy etc. if you don't like the post housing you can always live off base which is why you should consider crime rates and economy.
