When the Monarchy was overthrown by white plantation owners, with the help of the U.S. Navy, the Kingdom of Hawaii had an embassy in Washington , D.C., and recognized as a fully and diplomatically independent country by the U.S. and most european nations.
The Hawaiian people received a formal apology from the Congress of the United States during the Clinton administration for the role of U.S. military intervention in the overthrow of the Monarchy, and is moving forward today in the repatriation of Hawaiian lands held by the U.S. Goverment , back to the native peoples of Hawaiian ancestry.
