It's an AM/FM/Cassette system and is same as purchased. The FM is barely comming in, even if I go just of out a town such as Sebastopol, CA (pop 7,800). Also at home, where reception is above average for AM, I press the seek on FM and the seek goes through all FM station without stopping.

Don't replace the system just yet. It's worth checking both ends of the cable to ensure that the antenna is connected. If it is, then check with your local stereo shops to see if they have an old one kicking around. Changing the stereo is a really simple easy proceedure, providing you have the necessary tool for doing so. If not, most shops will swap a Ford stereo very cheaply or free.
