i have a 1 yr old female weiner dog who refuses to go outside to do her business. She refuses to do her thing in the garden and repeatedly makes a mess (urine and poo) in the house. Is it too late to change her habits and what should i do?

well being that she is 1 it may be harder but have u ever tryed the crate method?? if not then try putting her in a cage for one hour.
if she gets squerirmish or starts squating then carry her outside quickly. continue to say "go potty" or "go poo" through out the whole time u are out there.. if she goes praise her like there is no tomorrow and give her a treat...

if she does'nt go then put her back into the cage until she has to go again.. if u don't let up and keep at that she will eventually give in.
even a couple nights u may want to put her in there so she has no where else to go.. but at night i would take her out every 3 to 4 hours.. it can get stressing but if u don't allow her to go on the carpet or on the floor at all then she will no that she has no choice but to go outside. and that u are the boss.. i hope this helps..

lol i had 5 pups one time and it was extremely hard but i made it out alive! lol ok bye.. a friend amanda

Refuses, or hasn't been trained completely?

Sounds like she needs to go back to potty training school. ;)

Just start over. Take her out just as you would a puppy. Praise often. Treats, also.

Go to a pet store and buy the potty pads for dogs. Dogs are naturally attracted to them. Put them where you want Weenie to poo. After a time, you can remove the pads, and Weenie will poo and pee pee in the same area.

These pads work great, I've used them scores of times-

Good Luck!

Well, all I can suggest is taking things in small steps. Try buying a potty training pad and placing it in a place you feel would be okay for her to go. After place newspapers with a training pad on top. Dogs usually follow routine and go in the same spot every time. So after she get's used to that spot remove the training pad and paper train her. Give her a treat each time she uses the paper and soon you'll just be changing papers every 2-3 days. That's what I've done with my two dogs. ( 'u^ ) ::wink:: Good Luck and I hope my advice helps.

Its never to late just a little harder but you have to be stern too. Get a pet taxi or kennel just to fit the size of your dog. Not to big because you just want her to sleep in it and that's all. So consider this her bedroom. Keep her in the kennel at all times for now, when you take her out the kennel you put her outside to potty...if she goes you reward her if not she goes back in the kennel and you try again later. After she figures out what is going on she will potty every time you put her out. After you reward her you let her play around the house and watch her ..if she messes you scold her and back in the kennal and repeat the process. If you do not have time to watch her you put her in the kennal. Have her sleep in the kennal at night and when you are gone put her in her kennal. Its not cruel...they really start to enjoy there kennal as there space...like a teenager with there bed room ...its there space. But be fair and make sure you put her out so she is not holding herself to long and keep her on a schedual.

I have a Maltse that is litter box trained. Maybe all around it would be better to train the dog to use a litter box. Petsmart has them in different sizes.
