dont depend on sleeping pills, you dont want to be addicted, right? i mean later on you wont be able to sleep without sleeping pills, not to mention the side effects (nausea, dullness, headache) for prolonged usage.
when you want to sleep, just dont think too much over about your problem, work or whatsoever. leave them or just remind yourself you can do it tomorrow. as for myself, before i sleep i usually do some exercise, readings or watch movies. so by the time i finish them, i know it's time for me to sleep.
any other alternatives? yes, aromatheraphy. only if you're not alergic to them, it helps. some people even use that cd with jungle/ocean/waves sound to play over and over again. my friends said it helps, i dont know, when i sleep i want it to be quiet, so, i think it depends on the person.
arranging rooms might help. or getting a clean sheet, pillow and blanket. new environment makes you comfy though.
guess you have to find out what makes you difficult to sleep first. is it the work problem? is it because of the room? the temperature? the light? well, altough Albert Einstein said that sleeping is a waste of time, but human's body needs at least 6 hours sleep per day to restore the energy and concentration. so, you have to pay attention on your sleeping matter.

hi you need to be active in the day time no sleeps, save them for the night can get up a little early too try not to drink much coffee or sweet drinks after 4 pm and no food after 7 pm because even some foods can help to keep you awake and try to relax more when going to bed that will help.

don't take a nap during the day..
don't drink coffee after 4pm..
don't read or do your activities (like doing your homework) on your bed.. your bed is only for sleeping purpose..
don't leave the lights on..
lay still and don't move around when you can't sleep..
if after half an hour you still can't sleep.. don't toss and turn.. get up and do something quietly..
if you still can't sleep, try resting your body as if when you sleep.. and keep your eyes closed.. like you do mediation or something.. that way your body's metabollism will slow down and will get some rest..
Good luck :)

U can either drink Hot chocolate, Milo, or anything with warm milk-this makes u sleepy. Or um..something sexual, like making love to ur girlfriend(if u have one)or masturbate-that releases testosterone, causes exhaustion &the body to be in state to sleep.

Little meditation, bath in warm water. If not full body ,at least feet in warm water for 10-15 mins.
A work-out in the evening is also helpful.
