Your question is a good one. And to answer it I will quote Corinthians 3:11.......just kidding!!! It is unfortunate that the Bible is so carelessly quoted and usually out of context. The Bible is the Word of God and should be handled with great care. Unfortunately, it is all too often used as a weopon against others when God intended it to be used more like a mirror with which we should accomplish our own self-evaluation. Your question is a good reminder of how we should respect the Word of God and stop throwing it around to compensate for our own lack of communication skills.

Actually, if you take a very close look at the matter, I think you will find that what we call "the Bible" gradually came together over a very long period of time. Stuff is in the Bible that very likely had a non-verbal origin going back earlier than 1000 BC. Of course it changed a bit when it got written down, but a lot of the myths in Genesis and Exodus is very likely based on oral traditions going back that far. And the neat stories about Saul and his son Jonathon and friendship between Jonathon and David probably go back nearly that far. Folks who have looked into it seem to be in two groups, either giving the myths no basis at all, or giving them a fairly important place. The stuff which is getting quoted ("you can't live on bread only.") comes from this early material; the folks quoting it are of a much later period, such as first century AD. Remember that by the first century AD, the Hebrew Bible is pretty much in its final form, and for the people of Jesus' time, this early stuff was their Bible. It's what they learned in schul (or its first-century equivalent), and it's what governed their life and drove the ethical aspect of their culture. So it's natural that they quoted it. However, when I saw your question, I immediately thought of the other quoting that goes on. If you look at the Psalms, you sometimes find a Psalm quoted almost verbatim in another book, and no credit being given, of course. That Samuel, Kings and Chronicles has basis in shared material is obvious because at times the texts are exactly the same. At first that's what I thought you were talking about. However, both questions are very interesting, demonstrating how complex the origins of the Hebrew Bible are, and the respect in which the first-century folks held the Hebrew Scriptures.

"Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and possess the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants." (Isaiah 14:21 NAB)

I hate it when people quote the Bible. It's like trying to stab someone with a rubber sword. I am not a christian, the Bible means nothing to me, so shut up!

correct, their entire life is based on one single 2,000 year old book, this is why their answers are quotes that have nothing to do with the question a lot of the times.

You should repeat those 14 verses here for us to decide, maybe you're reading them upside down and the problem really lies with you.

There are people here from many different religions who use this forum as a pulpit, regardless if it pertains to the question or not.

Some do, many don't.
I don't think they even ask themselves if anyone really believes that stuff either.
