Yes they can last a long time especially if they're well maintained. My 1992 maxima had around 210,000 when I bought it last May, now it hit 218,000 a few days ago, It runs really well. From what I was told they can go over 300,000 if well taken care of.

It all depends on how the car was maintained. 170k is quite a bit but of it was taken care off, then that won't hurt it too much. Maxima's overall have always been the best Nissan has to offer, next to the Z. Give the vehicle a thorough inspection. There are some guides online that give you some ideas of what to check and look for. Good luck.

Nissan Maxima is one of the best. I have a 1995 baby and she(I named her Maxi) has never let me down in these cold mornings. No problems with starting up everyday. I bought her last year for 3500.00 with 123.000 miles on her and now she has about 130.000 I only go to work and back. I'm now selling her for 2800.00. I personaly would not buy a car with 170.000 miles on it but I dont think the motor or tran will be a problem. Maybe something minor.
Good luck....Keep Looking

If they have been well maintained, they will last. Just to give you
a value of a '97 Maxima with 170,000 miles on it (it is considered
to be a high-mile wholesale car), look on Edmunds.com to get a
real-world value of the car before you spend your hard-earned $
on a car that may be worth much less that you may expect.
Also, get a Car Fax on the V.I.N. to make sure it has a clear title.

Nissan makes good cars and from what I hear the Maxima engines is one of the most reliable around (also decent "kick" in them). I have a maxima over 200,000 ( 2000 model) and it runs pretty good except for the regular breakdown stuff (battery, worn windshield wiper, air conditioner broke down). Other than that it works great.
I think they say it's the same engine in the Pathfinder
