I think before you enter into relationships you should do both - make sure there is compatibility, but don't analyse it too much, just go with what you feel.

Yes, both of you have to compromise what you like and don't like.
Adaptation - you shouldn't have to change yourself for anyone. If they don't like you as you are - they don't really like you. And if you don't like them as they are - same goes.

How much compromise occurs? It depends on both of you. Habits and little things can be curbed easily. If you have a busy life and are juggling work and study with a relationship that can be hard. But if you both can give equally to the relationship that shouldn't be a problem.
